other  shopping districts

While the shopping district at Myeongdong is clearly the most superior shopping district in Seoul and Korea there are truly some other places in the city are also excellent shopping areas.

Consider trying some of these:

Itaewon

A busy shopping district near the only Mosque in Seoul this area has even more dining and restaurants than Myeongdong and is a great place for an evening outting. Shopping stays open till very late in Itaewon, but there is not much happening during the morning.  As Itaewon caters to more overseas visitors it will be easier to find large garment sizes here, but it may lack some of the unique Korean funky feel.  To travel between here and Itaewon use the metro / subway, from line 4 then change to line 6. It will take only about 20 minutes.

Dongdaemun

Chaotic but wonderful the Dongdaemun district is well known for it's fabric market. If you are interested in crafts, sewing or embroidery then this is a must see destination.

Ewha / Edae

This university district is next to Ewha Women's University but is properly called Edae and is therefore known by either name. As you would therefore expect it is a great place to buy young woman's fashions at very reasonable prices. Many small boutiques and new independent designers have started in this district. With small shops arranged in the winding streets around the university campus it is a great place to be.  Look out for stores in lanes with racks and racks of garments displayed on the pavement at just a few thousand Won each. Around Exit 1 and 2 from the subway are the best options.

Garosugil

Garosu-gil is an area of Gangnam with more than half Km long tree lined road is the center of both Asian and European cafes, fashion and boutiques with art galleries and night life also common. Quieter than Myeongdong this is also a good place to relax and shop slowly.

Apgujeong

Also known as Apgujeongdong this is a large and trendy area with shops for the wealthy young people of Seoul. Here you will find brands like Hermes, Dior, Botega Veneta and Hermes.

Gangnam Station

Inside the Gangnam Station itself is one of Seoul famed underground malls. Protected from the cold weather or the hot sun outside here shopping continues at all times of the day. While commuters keep the passage ways busy during the daytime in the evening many people go after they have had dinner to continue shopping.

Times Square Mall

One of the large indoor malls of a modern style in Seoul this offers shopping, restaurants and a large bookstore all under one roof.

Street Food

Along the many smaller streets in the area are plenty of small stalls selling street foods, either literally in the street or from window opening up from their small shops and kiosks.  Try some of the local favorites including deep fried sausage and rice cakes on a stick, or French Fries and sausage coated in batter on a stick.   More traditional are gyeran bbang which is a type of fried egg cake or muffin which is a tasty and nutritious snack that all people can enjoy.

For those who love spicy food try dakkochi which is a spicy chicken skewer, cooked over coals to get a BBQ flavor but with plenty of chili heat as well.

Try also the hotteok which is a stuffed small pancake with a sweet sugary filling. Great warmers on a cold evening these are a popular snack with children and adults alike.
